John Burroughs (April 3, 1837 - March 29, 1921)
John Burroughs was born on a farm, and received his education at a small local school. After leaving school at 17 to become a teacher, he became interested in the works of Emerson and Wordsworth, which inspired his own later writings. He wrote an essay and several poems, but was encouraged by Walt Whitman to continue his writings concerning the natural world. He also wrote the first biography of Whitman, which was edited by Whitman himself. Burroughs died at the age of 84, and was buried at the foot of a rock on which he played as a child.
