Hans Christian Andersen (Apr. 2, 1805 - Aug. 4, 1875)
Hans Christian Andersen was born into a shoemaker's family living in a one-room house, where he began creating his fairy tales with a small self-constructed puppet theatre. He moved to Copehagen at the age of 14, hoping to become an actor; when his voice changed, he became a writer at the suggestion of a colleague. King Frederick VI paid for his education, and he began writing his fairy tales soon after, with a focus on his own feelings of being different. His career continued until 1872, when he suffered an injury from which he never fully recovered - he died three years later near Copenhagen.
