Epictetus
Epictetus

(c. 55 - c. 135)
Epictetus spent his youth as a slave, but studied Stoic Philosophy during this period. Cruel treatment from his master crippled him, and he was later exiled by the emperor Dormition, along with several other philosophers. After this exile, he traveled to Greece, where he founded a school of philosophy. His writings and sayings were taken down by Arrian, his student, for prosperity. Epictetus focused his philosophy on the ability to be master of one's own life, and the separation of outward influences from inner achievements.
