John Dryden was one of fourteen children. He attended Westminster School, where he mastered the art of rhetoric. He wrote several tragedies, but is best known for Restoration comedies, which lampooned the questionable morality of the upper classes. He attained the post of English Poet Laureate in 1668, and was named historiographer royal in 1670. He fell out of favor with the court when King James was deposed in 1688, and died 12 years later; he is buried at Westminster Abbey.
