Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was educated by his father at an early age, and went on to study law at Wetzlar. Besides being a playwright and a poet, Goethe also held many political offices, and made great contributions to the field of science, especially his theories on evolution and linguistics. His writings and ideas have inspired many people, including Charles Darwin, and his poems inspired famous composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. He devoted himself entirely to literature in 1794, and died in 1832 after a long and productive life.
